COURSE DESCRIPTION

Technical writing is not rocket science.  In general, technical writing is simply writing about anything of a “technical” nature.

By learning an established process for developing technical documentation, this process can be repeated time and time again for consistent results. Regardless of your writing proficiency, the more time spent working the process, the more proficient you’ll become.

This course is designed for novice writers, writers of other material types who want to become technical writers, or experienced technical writers who want to refine their current writing skills.  If focuses on software documentation while touching on other types of documentation that can be produced.

COURSE OUTLINE

  • Learning the software application for which you’ll be writing the documentation.

-         Hands on interaction with the application

-         Experimenting with functionality

-         Interviewing subject matter experts

-         Gathering related information

  • Identifying and understanding the target audience.
  • Determining the materials need to be created.

-         User Guides

-         Quick Start Guides

-         Online Help

-         Training Materials

  • Presenting accurate and straight-forward content.

-         Document flow

-         Instructional steps

-         Graphical elements

  • Handling final production tasks.
  • Publishing the finished technical writing materials.

COURSE OBJECTIVE

After this course, you will be able to:

  • Teach yourself to use a software application or hardware product without formal training.
  • Determine the target audience for your technical materials.
  • Develop both operational and functional instructions using a “tried and true” process.
  • Understand the wide array of documentation formats.
  • Write effective materials regardless of prior writing experience.

There are several options for this learning opportunity:

  • Option #1: Self-Study
    You'll receive the workbook for studying on your own.  Price: $99
  • Option #2: Self-Study with Email Support
    You'll receive the workbook for studying on your own and are provided email support.  Price: $149
  • Option #3: Self-Study with Email Support and Phone Call.
    Same as Option 1 but with the addition of a phone call during which time you can ask questions and can even see "live" how things are achieved (using GoToMeeting™).  Price: $229
  • Option #4:  Self-Study and Instructor-Led Teleclass
    Provides 2-hour teleclass on two designated days with self study before each class and between the scheduled class dates.  Price: $299
  • Option #5: Instructor-Led Teleclass
    Includes two full days of instruction, taking you through the workbook while watching via the internet using GoToMeeting™.  You watch from the privacy of your home/office.  Can be completed in one weekend or over the course of two weekends.
    A certificate is offered to those students who can pass a written exam.  Price: $499
  • Option #6: Technical Writing as a Career
    This option includes everything offered with Option #5, above. It also includes personal, one-on-one sessions after the learning opportunity is completed for resume updating, creating a portfolio of samples, and finding a job as a technical writer.  Price: $899
